Today, Luxury Bicycles are becoming increasingly popular all over the world. In general, bicycles are attractive because they are environmentally friendly, easy to manoeuvre and smaller than a car. A bicycle does not need fuel and can even be parked at home.

It would seem that such a vehicle would be rather inexpensive; however, that’s not the case! There are quite the luxury bicycles out there with some seriously jaw-dropping prices! Over the last decade, technology has significantly improved frames, suspension design, drivetrain, braking systems and wheels.

All these innovations have made bicycles more functional and durable. Needless to say, these inventions also significantly impacted the prices of bicycles. Some models are one-offs, embellished with jewels, or made from expensive materials.

But what makes a bicycle a “luxury bicycle” exactly? Also, how much do luxury bicycles cost, anyway? In this article, we are trying to answer these questions with our quest for the best luxury bicycles in the world.

24K House of Solid Gold

Price: $1 million

This one has the word “Gold” in its name; do we need to say more here?! With a price of $1 million, this 24 kg gold bicycle is undoubtedly the most luxurious out there. Each House of Solid Gold metal element is electroplated in pure gold.

The saddle is made from chocolate brown alligator leather and comes with a one-of-a-kind gold-plated water bottle. At the same time, the logo is inlaid with 6ct black diamonds and 500 gold sapphires. There are 13 pieces, each custom-made individually for the owner and engraved with the artist’s signature.

Damien Hirst’ Butterfly’ Trek Madone

Price: $500,000

The second on the list of luxury bicycles worldwide is the Damien Hirst “Butterfly” Trek Madone. The $500,000 bicycle is a work of art by Damien Hirst, bought at auction for $500,000.

Damien created the “Butterfly” Trek Madone in honour of famous cyclist Lance Armstrong, who rode this bicycle through the Champs-Élysées on the last day of the 2009 Tour de France.

Damien Hirst raised real butterflies specifically to create this creation. Their wings decorated the wheels and body of the bicycle, which turned out extremely beautiful and original.

Although it’s gorgeous, some animal rights activists have called it barbaric because of the use of real natural butterfly wings on the bicycle.

Trek Yoshitomo Nara Speed Concept

Price: $200,000

This two-wheeler was designed by Trek and decorated by renowned Japanese pop artist Yoshitomo Nara. Nara was one of 20 artists invited to create bicycles for the Sotheby’s auction, the same auction as the Butterfly Madone, which took place on 1 November 2009 in support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Lance Armstrong previously rode the fast-racing two-wheeler with original artwork in some significant cycling races. The bicycle features drawings of children’s faces and the inscriptions ‘Bontrager’ and ‘Livestrong’. The luxury bicycle was auctioned at Sotheby’s for $200,000.

Kaws – Trek Madone

Price: $160,000

Aurumania Crystal Edition

Price: $114,000

It would make sense to believe that a bicycle with most of its parts covered in gold would be the most luxurious bicycle on our list. However, Aurumania’s Crystal Edition gold bicycle costs $114,000, which is much lower than the Butterfly Madone. The bicycle was made by the Scandinavian company Aurumania, which specialises in high-end two-wheelers. At the time of its production, it was the most expensive luxury bicycle ever made.

The Aurumania Crystal Edition Gold bicycle is almost entirely covered in gold and adorned with more than 600 crystals. The seat and handles are made from the highest quality leather, and the manufacturer’s inscription “Aurumania” can be seen along the bar. A total of ten such bicycles were made, and each one was given a 10-year warranty.

Each bicycle had a number embossed in gold leaf and the distinctive Aurumania logo on the crossbar. Its popularity is difficult to determine, as Aurumania has only created ten units of this model and about 50 units without the crystals.

Trek Madone 7-Diamond

Price: $75,000

Trek Madone 7-Diamond is a bicycle decorated with 100 white diamonds and seven one-carat diamonds lined with the number seven. This luxury bicycle was created in honour of Lance Armstrong, who won the Tour de France seven times in a row.

Trek created this model, and jeweller Alan Freedman made the “Diamond 7” plaque, which was attached to the front of the bicycle. The plaque is crafted in white and yellow gold with seven bright yellow diamonds hand-crafted in 1 carat, each representing one of cyclist Lance Armstrong’s victories.

In 2005, this bicycle was purchased by an anonymous buyer for $75,000 at the same auction as the other Treks.

The luxury bicycle is covered with foliage, rosettes and other organic Art Nouveau-style figures. In 2008, it was sold at Bonham’s New York auction to an anonymous buyer for $50,000.
